Democracy Beyond Bars is an incarcerated-person led abolitionist organization, whose mission is to contribute to the de-carceration and closure of U.S. prisons and the self-agency of incarcerated people. Centering the voices of the incarcerated class within the progressive discourse of legislative and grassroots advocacy work, we are guided by our collective experience and expertise of the criminal legal system as we pursue policy solutions which keep our people out of prisons and jails and our families and communities safe.
Democracy Beyond Bars Vision
Democracy Beyond Bars is built on the belief that incarcerated individuals can and should be active participants in their own liberation. For decades, voices from behind prison walls have worked to dismantle the barriers separating them form the outside world, offering critical insights into the realities of life inside. Kenthy's leadership focuses on ensuring that these voices are not just heard but are at the forefront of efforts to reshape the criminal justice system. Through education on the legislative process and the empowerment of incarcerated individuals to influence policy, Kenthy and Democracy Beyond Bars work to bridge the gap between those behind bars and community-based social justice movements. The goal is to foster meaningful collaboration that incorporates the perspectives of incarcerated people into the broader fight for a more just and equitable society.
